Understand how OCR works, enhance photos of documents, and review numbers, accents, and tables before copying text.

You photographed a receipt or received a printout with a paragraph that you need to edit. Retyping everything takes time, and copying text directly from the image is not always possible. Optical character recognition, known as OCR, attempts to transform letter designs into selectable text.

Prepare the image before recognizing

The quality of the capture counts a lot. A leaf photographed from the side leaves slanted lines; a strong shadow can hide words, and reflections on laminated paper erase entire passages. Look for a frontal photo, with uniform light and enough resolution to read the letters without zooming in too much.

Trim the edges that do not contain text with theimage cropper. If necessary, correct the rotation before sending the file to theOCR text extractor. This preparation reduces irrelevant areas and helps the tool identify lines.

What to check after OCR

OCR does not understand the document as a person. Depending on the font and contrast, the number 0 can become the letter O, and 1 can look like I or l. Accents, currency symbols, serial numbers, and proper names also require review. If the text will be used in a contract or application, compare each important piece of data with the original image.

Tables need special attention: the tool may recognize all words but deliver columns out of order. For spreadsheets, check values line by line and reassemble the cell structure. In handwritten documents, the result varies greatly depending on the handwriting.

When OCR helps and when it doesn't

It's great for using excerpts from brochures, scanning readable notes, and locating numbers on receipts. It is not an authentication process: recognizing a text does not prove that the data was correct in the original document. And a photo so blurry you can't read it will probably be difficult for the program too.

Some OCR libraries are loaded over the network before running in the browser. Therefore, confirm the connection and wait for the initial loading. For confidential information, seePrivacy Policyand avoid pasting sensitive content into external translation services.

After reviewing, paste the text into your editor and save a copy. Keep the source image to check future doubts; it remains the most reliable visual reference.
