How to remove the background from an image and improve cropping edges

Learn how to choose the type of cropping, check hair and transparencies and export a PNG without halos on the edges.
You remove the background from a photo, place the result on a dark banner and discover a white outline around the person. On the transparent background, the cutout looked perfect. This detail happens because the edge of the photograph mixes colors from the object and the original scenery. Removing the scenery is only half the job: you also need to watch this mix.
Choose the method according to the picture
Photos of people often require a model who recognizes hair, shoulders and clothing. For products and objects, the object-oriented model can preserve the shape better. An image with a completely uniform background can be cleaner using the color removal mode. NodeFileBito background remover, compare the modes before deciding.
There is no adjustment that works on all photographs. If a white mug is in front of a white wall, the tool can confuse the two. Glass, smoke, stray hair, and transparent shadows are especially difficult: they require different degrees of transparency in the same pixel.
Check the borders on two different backgrounds
After processing, enlarge the image and observe the contours on a light and dark background. Look for missing hair ends, smudges between fingers, leftover bottoms on clothing, and jagged edges. A very strong cleaning setting leaves the object looking like it was cut with scissors; softening it too much creates a fog around it.
The best path is usually to change little at a time. First check the automatic clipping, then discreetly increase cleaning if there is residue. Use smoothing only if you notice stairs in the contours. If the result worsens, return the controls to zero and try the other processing mode.
Export and test on the real destination
To maintain transparency, save as PNG. JPG does not store an alpha channel: when converting a transparent PNG to JPG, the background will have to be given a color. Open the exported file in an editor or place it over the final color of the part. It is at this moment that details hidden in the preview appear.
For a store, especially check the silhouette of the product and any holes between handles. For a profile photo, check hair and ears at the size the avatar will be displayed at. If the source photo is out of focus or has light that is too similar to the background, capturing another image may bring more results than insisting on the controls.
Final tip:Save the original photo and the exported PNG. This way you can re-cut to another background without losing quality in new editions. To adjust the dimensions later, use theimage resizer.
